No photos today - arrived at the spinning grotto with a camera with a dead battery. So those thousand words will have to be supplied the old-fashioned way: A highly detailed, completely accurate written account that will keep you on the edge of your seat. A thriller of the highest degree!
Attendees: Well, there was John, and Matt, and Matt's friend Lindsey. John had his friend Morrie there. From Klipsch, there was Larry, and Gary, and Melissa. We are still inquiring as to the whereabouts of Tom - he had reserved a spot, we saved him a bike, brought extra snacks for him, some great goodies and prizes for him. Too bad he didn't show!\
Things got off to a shaky start: John ripped the stem out of his tube when he decided his rear tire, with about 105 psi of air in it, could stand to be pumped up to precisely 120psi. No spare. The good thing this occurrence brought about - it caused John to realize he had forgotten his music - DUH! He made the round trip back home in 25 minutes. Everyone was there by the time he returned, and Matt has popped in some music and everyone was chatting and rolling the legs. So, about 10 minutes after 10, we officially got under way - perfect "Wendy Time".
Melissa - sporting a nifty headband, and matching water bottles that were neither ProMotion nor Two Wheel Sports supplied. She and Gary coordinated shirts, and that was nice. Mel spin for a little over two hours and did AWESOME! Climbing like a Geswein, she was. She may well be kicking Frank's ass at the Hilly this year! Melissa also was the high point scorer in the "name that artist" contest, and even correctly named The Airborne Toxic Event (i.e. TATE) that was played toward the end of her session.
Morrie - Fresh off a grueling couple weeks at the bank, and prepping for a well-deserved Sanabell vacation, Morrie also rode for a little over two hours. He has been following a very strict Zone Two regimen the past several weeks - you should have seen the look of delight on his face when, in the second hour, John "let him loose" to simply ride how he felt - and it looked like he felt strong! He has arranged for a rental bike in Sanabell and will be doing the Saturday group ride down there from the local shop. Go Morrie! Thanks to his astutely executed shoulder shrug during the vote for Kings of Leon or Midnight Oil, Morrie was the tie-breaker and we got to listen to the great new Kings of Leon tune. Larry wept.
Larry - rode hard, rode with discipline, and inspired with his dogged determination and mental focus. Oh, also - it's always nice to have a guy in class whose favorite songs are also your favorite songs, even if he didn't vote for Kings of Leon and made a face at The Airborne Toxic Event. His hang-able, portable bento box for his snacks, which he also shared with Gary, was a great innovation - was that something that Young Brad shared with you, Larry? Larry was also sporting some freshly shaved legs - said the trainer at the pool had talked him into it (He has been swimming three mornings a week for a triathlon in the summer, but he'll deny it if you ask him about it).
Gary - coerced Matt into playing a heavy Beatles mix during his set, which certainly worked well for the group! Plus, he started the streak whereby Matt had to do all those 15-second sprints in a row. Sometime in hour two, he hit a heart rate that was completely unauthorized and which we will NOT be repeating on purpose anytime soon - but he came through it without trauma, without drama. We settled things back down in the third hour and cruised along, endurance-like. Gary did not shave his legs, nor did he make too much fun of Larry's smooth gams.
Lindsey - so, during Matt's set, John took over the space next to Lindsey, and the scene looked like that "Great Dane and Fox Terrier" photo from last year's Coast-2-Coast race. Rumor has it she was once coached by the Chris Carmichael group, but we let her continue to ride anyway, mainly because she offered a sincere compliment to John on his pedaling mechanics (thanks to Maggie for that one!). No, this was not Young Brad's new girlfriend, but she could have been - oh, except she's married.
Matt - oh, right, ought to say something about him I guess. Well, he was wearing bright blue TrueSport kit and rode that fancy-schmancy bike of his (yes, I'm just jealous). As mentioned above, he played a nice mix of Beatles tunes. We played the rock/paper/scissors game, and he had to sprint like four times in a row - it was sweet! The "race to the top" was especially challenging as it occurred during hour two. Matt finished last in "Name that Tune" because he kept guessing Massive Attack and Chemical Brothers, even when it was clearly U2 (which Tom woudl have gotten right had be been present because he ALWAYS guesses U2).
So, two and three hours of some focused, beneficial, specific cardio work for these warriors! Laying the foundation for the future!! Great job. And this after shoveling all that snow on Wednesday!

A Boppin' Great Time!!
This is Team Klipsch immediately after the finish, still in the hallway in fact! And they had every right to be smiling! They did a super job: left to right -
Alex - a very respectable time of 6:29 in his first bopping experience (and no special Asian training trip under his belt - maybe Brad will take him next year)
Brad - Not only defended his age-group championship, but also shattered the 5-min barrier with a time of 4:37 and finishing 11th overall (missing top ten by a mere one-tenth of a second).
Tom - Soundly broke the 6-min barrier with a time of 5:48. Great cross-training, this stair climbing thing, for Tom's primary athletic pursuit of roller-blading/skating.
Craig - Also broke the 6-min barrier, and his age has long broken the 50 year barrier. An awesome climb!
Team Klipsch finished second in the ultra-competitive Open Division! Laura also won her age-group and her Co-Ed team finished 3rd.
(In a side note, there were 55 "Triple-Steppers" this year - that is the division where competitors go up THREE TIMES and their times are added together. Last year, there were about 30. John finished 13th last year with an average of 6:47, and this year would have finished just about the same place if he had repeated that time. He decided to skip the event this year, although he enjoyed it a lot last year - he just didn't get along well with all those left-hand turns!)

Klipsch Engineers Re-Define ANAL
This just in....
It has been reported from the most reliable of sources that one of our fine, Klipsch engineers has set-off on their own journey to better health and more vibrant living. And proving that even someone with 25 years of experience in leading people through the tortured maze of everyday life can see new things every now and then, this engineer left our own Coach Cooper speechless and chuckling to herself recently:
For this same engineer, while constructing and preparing their nutrition log to share with Coach Coop, actually photocopied the labels and nutrition panels right off the food!!
Priceless....and very effective and useful!

Warriors on the Hardwood
This is Ted. I'd hoped to have this photo last in the posting, but blogger is sort of being difficult today. (Maybe it is just the operator). Anyway - the thing of interest here is Ted's stance and positioning: knees bent, head up, arms spread, weight on the balls of his feet so he can quickly move in any direction, and most important, a flat and powerful spine! Ted has been a defensive specialist in basketball all the years he has played: He is short, not real quick, not a great shot, tends to foul out of games, but can still contribute a lot on the basketball court with his fierce tenacity and defense. He loves blocking out the biggest guy on the other team to fight for rebounds.
Our children offer beautiful lessons for us all the time. It's a blessing to precious to ignore.
Peace...

Yep, it's January...
It's the middle of January. It's cold, and getting colder. The perfect time to consider:
the Mini Marathon is in May
RAIN is in July
Coast-2-Coast is in August
Corporate Challenge is in September
the Hilly Hundred is in October
RAIN is in July
Coast-2-Coast is in August
Corporate Challenge is in September
the Hilly Hundred is in October
What does this have to do with January? Well, it's simple - and it goes something like this. If you want to participate, and participate WELL in these events, and many, many others like them this Spring, Summer and Fall, NOW IS THE TIME TO BEGIN PREPARATIONS!!
Get out your calender - put a big, red circle around the date of your your personal favorite event. Start counting backwards, account for vacations, business travel, some quality family time thrown in here and there, maybe even a few days for being sick, and what you'll find is: It's not that far away. NOW IS THE TIME TO BEGIN PREPARATIONS!!

A view from the other side of the tracks....
They don't have spin classes, or boxing, or yoga yet - but we're working 'em!
Hey - it's been pretty active at the Klipsch dojo this week! And that is AWESOME! I hope we carry this momentum for a long time. A quick reminder on spinning: We only have 7 bikes - the past two classes have been FULL. If you plan on spinning, and want to be assured of a bike to ride, be sure to sign up ahead of time, and then, for CERTAIN, show up! That bike will be reserved for you and if you don't show up it will go to waste.
In sweat......

Starting off right...
Larry Coan was unable to join as he is still down in Florida doing spin classes where they perform 2009 jumps! (and you thought Singleton liked to do jumps!)
Morrie Maurer missed out because the party was at his house last night and as host he was a little hamstrung to get to bed relatively early. He made it up out of his hole by 11:30 though - so good for him. I'd bet a month's pay he will be on his trainer later.
Matt Tanner had good intentions but fell down on the execution - he asked his wife for permission to attend, which of course she curtly denied. Instead, he should have just left the house early, before she was awake, and then simply seek forgiveness when, upon his arrival back home, he had to answer the question of "where the hell have you been".
John Wright had something else in mind - he rode his mountain bike outside this morning! Good for him! (FYI - he was the lead rider for the Delta Faucet team at the corporate challenge cycling event this year).
Spitz - I guess he is struggling with a gimpy knee - good luck with that, Spitz!
Bertke - Well, I didn't hear anything official so I am tempted to make up something though I will refrain for now - turning over new leaf, resolutions, and the spirit of the season interfering on many levels.
So, just who DID come ride on this beautiful, sunny first morning of the year?
Look for him to be the next ProMotion Fitness "poster-boy"!
Thanks for joining us, it was a PLEASURE to have you ride with us!
And thanks for letting Matt come, too!
Matt is back on the bandwagon and really starting to crank the chi!
Check him out on the treadmills in the early morning hours.
He's puttin' in the time!
Gary Westfall.
Be sure to check out the awesome article on Gary's personal fitness journey over the past couple years. There was a great piece in the Indianapolis Star on Tuesday (Dec.30th) A special shout-out of BIG THANKS to Sarah Knight for facilitating the article. It was nicely done.
Our fitness community at Klipsch, this powerful "sangha" that is growing here, played an important part in Gary's continuing journey - and it can play a part in your personal journey as well.
Wishing you all a SUPER 2009! Thanks for reading...
